Safety Last! is a 1923 American silent romantic comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. It includes one of the most famous images from the silent film era: Lloyd clutching the hands of a large clock as he dangles from the outside of a skyscraper above moving traffic. Lloyd played an unnamed young man who poses as a department store manager to impress his girlfriend.
The film was highly successful and critically hailed, and it cemented Lloyd's status as a major figure in early motion pictures. It is still popular at revivals and is viewed today as one of the great film comedies. In 1994, Safety Last! was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

On March 16th, you are invited to a special event from the Oh So Pretty Concert series! The screening of The Fall of the House of Usher will be accompanied by live music performed by a unique musical group - Xoanon. Its members are Graham Keane, Brendan Pooley, and Antonis Kalamoutsos. Their joint musical journeys are directed towards experimental music, drone ambient, improvised music, post-rock, and psychedelia.
The Fall of the House of Usher (French: La chute de la maison Usher) is a 1928 French horror film directed by Jean Epstein, one of several films based on the 1839 Gothic short story The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe.
Roderick Usher summons his friend to his crumbling old mansion in the remote countryside. Usher has been obsessed with painting a portrait of his dying wife Madeline. When she passes away, Usher has her buried in the family crypt.
The Fall of the House of Usher was written by Luis Buñuel and Jean Epstein. Following an argument with Epstein about his interpretation of the material, Buñuel left the production.
It is a common opinion among contemporary film critics that this movie was one of the most renowned experimental silent films.

American silent crime comedy-drama film from 1927, produced by Cecil B. DeMille and directed by Frank Urson. It stars Phyllis Haver as a wild jazz-loving and boozing wife Roxie Hart, a fame-obsessed housewife who kills her lover in cold blood after he leaves her. After trying to coerce her husband into taking the blame, the woman is put on trial for murder.
The plot of the film is drawn from the 1926 play Chicago by Maurine Dallas Watkins which was in turn based on the true story of Beulah Annan, fictionalized as Roxie Hart (Phyllis Haver), and her spectacular murder of her boyfriend.
The story has had further film adaptations, most recently in 2002, starring Renée Zellweger as Roxie, and won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2003. The version we invite you to see at Silent Cinema is still going strong despite the passage of almost a century.
